2011 Norwegian Small Grants Recipients announced

The Royal Norwegian Embassy has completed the selection of projects for small grants in 2011, providing financial support to civil society in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. Priority has been given to projects on the environment, energy efficiency, education, human rights and civil society, promotion of entrepreneurship among women, gender equality, democracy and media development.

Financial support of the total sum 200 000 USD is provided in the form of grants on a competitive basis. The size of the grants is up to 20 000 U.S. dollars.



The winning projects of 2011 in Kazakhstan are as follows:

- “Legal support network for individual complaints to UN’s Human Rights Committee” by The Kazakh International Bureau for Human Rights. The project aims to provide free legal assistance to citizens in the preparation and filing of individual complaints to lawyers and human rights activists and citizens.

 

- “Developing practices of investigation for TV-journalismby the Public Fund "MediaNet International Center for Journalists". The project aims to train journalists   in investigative TV-journalismon socially important issues, with the aim of publishing the final work in partner channels and web-platforms.

 

- “Legal support to labour migrants” by the Legal Center of Women Initiatives Sana Sezim. The project aims to protect the rights of migrant workers from Uzbekistan, as potential victims of trafficking.    

 

-  “Towards improved service delivery to poor children with disabilitiesby the International Association of Social Projects. The project aims at improving the services to children with disabilities and supporting their families living in the rural district of Ilijskij, where services are currently unavailable.

 

- “Better light” by Ainalain Youth Center. The project aims at creating a volunteer resource centre for youth. Here they will develop new skills, participate in leadership activities, and access resources for planning their own community projects and trainings.

 

 

The winning projects of 2011 in Kyrgyzstan are as follows:

- “Solving problems with soil degradation and climate change” by the Public Fund Ekois.

The project aims to create a demo park - local nature reserve in the area of ​​5 ha, demonstrating how land degradation and climate change can be combated through the use of environmentally friendly management methods. 

 

- “Vegetable garden in Semenovskiy orphanageby the Semenovskiy orphanage. The project aims to give youth skills and experience in agriculture, service, repair and management of agricultural equipment, and develop their business skills.

 

 

The winning projects of 2011 in Tajikistan are as follows:

- “Business development among women in Rushan region” by the Business Development Center Sarez. The project aims to promote entrepreneurship among women in the Rushan region.

 

- “Woman and her rights in the modern worldby NGO Phoenix. The project aims to increase the level of legal protection and security of women in Vahdat city and 11 Jamoats, through conduction of workshops and trainings.

 

-“Assistance to long-time and life prisoners” by the League of Female Lawyers of Tajikistan. The project aims at promoting the implementation of methods for the treatment of prisoners sentenced to the long and lifelong imprisonment in line with international standards in Tajikistan.

 

- “Blogging as a tool of expanding the legal space” by Youth of the New Century. The project aims to train 20 lawyers to build legal and consulting blogs, train volunteer groups who will travel to the regions to educate young people on how to use the online consultation sites and search for legal information.

 

- “Education - the way to strengthen of potential and sustainability” by Social Organization Iktidor. The project aims at building the capacity of existing community organizations through training sessions about effective organizational management, project management and strategic planning, etc.

 

-“The police is on the lookout for women’s security” by Women’s Centre Gulruhsor.

The project aims to improve the quality of legal aid to women/victims of domestic violence through education, group discussions and to build interaction between the social service agencies, crisis centers and law enforcement agencies.

 

- “Increasing legal and political knowledge of rural women” by Social Organisation Tahmina. The project aims to improve the legal and political knowledge of rural women to enhance their roles and participation in the establishment and strengthening of a democratic society based on human rights.

 

- “Education of disabled people and rural women” by Social Organization Sayor.

The project aims to enhance legal literacy, teaching profession, to provide moral and psychological assistance to the most vulnerable groups, the disabled, women and children in the city Vahdat, as well as Afghan refugees.
