Norwegian delegation to discuss freedom of religion in Kazakhstan

On November 25th former Prime Minister of Norway and current president of the Center for Peace and Human Rights (Oslo) Kjell Magne Bondevik and representatives of the Oslo Center and the Norwegian Helsinki Committee visited Astana.
The occasion for the visit was meetings with government officials on the topics of freedom of religion and other fundamental human rights in Kazakhstan. In meetings with the Ombudsman for Human Rights Askar Shakirov and Chairman of Kazakhstan's Agency for Religious Affairs Kairat Lama Sharif the delegation discussed issues relating to religious freedom in Kazakhstan. In particular, the delegation expressed their concern regarding the new law on religion, and the new Law on introducing Amendments and Additions recently adopted by the Parliament of Kazakhstan. During the visit the delegation also met with ambassador Dag Halvorsen and deputy Anne Marte Amble of the Norwegian embassy in Astana.
