On iron horses through Kazakhstan

Sist oppdatert: 17.11.2011 // If they had known all the challenges they were going to face along the road, the three young Norwegians might have dropped their plan. Martin Bredeli (28), Kristian Pettersen (28) and Morten Espeland (26) ventured into the unknown when they left Beijing and drove westwards on two CJ750 motorcycles on 1 August 2011.

After crossing Mongolia and briefly driving through Russia, the three musketeers entered Kazakhstan in October. Their plan is to drive approximately 12 000 kilometers, all the way to Egersund, a city on the west coast of Norway. If the weather, the motorcycles and the roads permit.

On a seemingly never-ending journey across the steppe, the engineer, nurse and photographer struggle against snow, wind and motorcycles that break down. But they also make strong friendships along the way, tells Morten Espeland:

“We set out on this journey wanting to understand what people in Asia and Eastern Europe think about contemporary society, politics and the West. On our journey we have been talking to car mechanics in Mongolia and border guards in Russia and everyone else we have met along the way. This way we get to know each other and the differences and similarities between our cultures. And it turns out, we are not that different.

After a few days in Astana where they enjoyed the hospitality of Norwegian expatriates, they once again climbed up on their iron horses and drove westwards as the winter came closer. Dressed in Mongol clothes driving vintage motorcycles they are being noticed as they drive through Kazakhstan.

”We have encountered big technical problems with our bikes, but everywhere we meet such wonderful people who offer their help,” says Morten. “In Kazakhstan we have experienced an impressive hospitality, and we will speak warmly about this country when we return to Norway.”
